  • A Level Geography Trip - October 2023

    Published 30/10/23

Geographers brave the elements to conduct fieldwork in Kingsgate Bay, Kent

A little bit of rain didn't stop the A-level geographers from heading out to Kingsgate Bay to conduct a study on coastal shaping processes and influencing factors. After analysing the geology, including lithology and structure, the students measured the sea arch and caves, as well as the beach profile at various points throughout the bay. The collected data will be presented and analysed in the classroom. This hands-on experience helped reinforce the theory learned in class and provided excellent preparation for their Year 13 independent investigation.

  • Black History Month Speaker - Ore Ogungbayi

    Published 26/10/23

Celebrating Black History Month with Ore Ogungbayi

As part of our Black History Month celebration, we had the pleasure of hosting Ore Ogungbayi. This year's theme is “Saluting our Sisters,” and Ore is a remarkable example of a successful, resilient woman. Ore shared her story of growing up as a child of Black Nigerian immigration, fostered by a white British family. She was recently featured in a Channel 5 documentary that explored the impact of "farming," a practice where over 70,000 West African children were fostered by white Britons between 1955 and 1995. The documentary sheds light on the controversy surrounding this official policy and the long-lasting effects it had on those impacted by it.

Despite the challenges Ore faced, she became a successful entrepreneur, author, life coach and public speaker. For over a decade, Ore has worked with our school, delivering workshops on public speaking. During her visit, Ore spoke about her success and resilience, and we are extremely proud to have her as part of our community. Ore, we salute you!

    Synopsis of the documentary:

The Channel 5 documentary explores the experiences of nine individuals who were raised as part of the controversial "farming" practice. These individuals were fostered by white Britons between 1955 and 1995, and they share their stories of dealing with such a major change at a young age. For many of them, the workshop retreat was the first time they had the opportunity to connect with others who shared similar experiences. The documentary, called "White Nanny Black Child," is a personal, poignant, and sometimes unsettling reflection on identity, belonging, and the nature of family.

Exciting trips to Tump 53 Nature Reserve for Year 7 Students

    16th - 20th October 2023

This week, our Head of Transition, Ms Franklin, arranged for Year 7 students to visit the nearby Tump 53 Nature Reserve in their respective form groups. The reserve is a precious community space that provides a platform for children, the youth, and the wider community to connect with nature and the environment.

These trips are a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7 students to develop their collaborative skills and cultivate friendships within their tutor group. Upon arrival, students were divided into groups and participated in a variety of team-building and problem-solving activities, all of which require them to think creatively and work cohesively with their peers.

For the second part of the trip, students moved to another location where they are tasked with constructing a shelter using only tarpaulin and ropes tied around the existing trees. The shelters were then tested for durability as water was poured over them!

The students thoroughly enjoyed their time in the reserve, acquiring new skills and making new friendships along the way. We would like to extend our gratitude to the team at Tump 53 for their outstanding work in hosting these workshops for our students.

  • WPSfB supporting World Mental Health Day 2023

    Published 12/10/23

Let's Talk About Mental Health on #WorldMentalHealthDay 🌍💚

Today, we take the time to raise awareness about mental health. It's crucial to show that mental health is just as important as physical health. Everyone should know that it's okay to ask for help when they need it.

Here are just a few ways that we are supporting students mental health here at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys:

In order to support students mental health we have invited in MHST to deliver a range of workshops over the coming year.

    • October - Year 11 Anxiety Workshop
    • November - Year 7 Exam Stress Workshop
    • January - Year 9 Social Media and Mental Health Workshop
    • February - Year 8 Low Mood Workshop
    • May - Year 10 Exam Stress Workshop

Mental Health is also supported through out PSHE programme. Check out our Jigsaw curriculum map on our website here.

May be a doodle of text that says "World Mental Health Day 2023 PolyMAT ASKING FOR HELP IS OK"

Observing World Mental Health Day: Taking a Moment Together

We took portraits of staff at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, all captured in a moment of quiet reflection.

Inspired by Ray Burmiston's "Take a Moment" exhibition, which features a collection of portraits of individuals with their eyes closed. "Take a Moment" encourages us to take a few seconds of our day to focus on our mental health – to breathe, disconnect, and then reconnect. In our fast-paced world, this simple action can make a life-changing difference.

    https://takeamoment.uk/

The Take a Moment initiative reminds us to slow down, to step back, to stay still and just be.

Thank you to everyone involved in creating this project.
