Year 10 Historians visit the National Archives at Kew

On Thursday, 6th March, our Year 10 historians had the incredible opportunity to visit the National Archives at Kew. They attended a workshop on Elizabethan England to support their History GCSEs, where they engaged with 16th-century documents bound by the Victorians. Our students translated original documents written by Elizabeth I, focusing on her ascension to power, marriage, and succession. Our students were fantastic and truly engaged with the documentation.

As a reward for their hard work and impressive translation skills, they were shown an item that saved Elizabeth's life. After being accused of treason and involvement in the Wyatt Rebellion, Elizabeth wrote a letter pleading her innocence to her sister. Our students had the privilege of seeing this letter in Elizabeth's own hand, complete with her small signature at the bottom.

It was a wonderful visit, and our students are eagerly looking forward to their return in Year 11 for a focus on the Cold War.
