Student Council
Woolwich Poly Student Council is a representative structure through which our students can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school leadership, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and our students.
Woolwich Poly Student Council gives students an opportunity to acquire the sort of communication, planning and organisational skills which will be of benefit to them in their future lives. It enables students to take responsibility for projects, and to demonstrate that they can manage and bring such projects to a successful conclusion.
The Student Council is the voice of the student body.
Meetings
Student Council members meet weekly on Wednesdays. We listen carefully to what others have to say and are open to other people’s opinions. Our meetings are about exchanging ideas and information and learning from each other.
Award winning student council
Woolwich Poly Student Council has been presented with various awards in recent years: these include runners up in the 11 to 16 category of the Speaker’s School Council Award for our ‘Don’t risk it on the roads’ campaign. We were recognised because our campaign resulted in a positive change for our students and the whole community on the roads in our area. Student council were also presented with a special recognition award by TFL for this same campaign.
We have just received news that we are to be presented with a prestigious Green School Award on February 14th 2019 in recognition of our ‘Choose to Reuse’ campaign. We are very excited about the upcoming ceremony.
Choose to reuse
Our ‘choose to reuse’ campaign has really got the whole school thinking about plastic pollution. Through a number of assemblies to raise awareness, the student council have managed to persuade all staff to give up their disposable coffee cups and replace them with our very own reusable cups. Students are now able to buy our #POLY365 reusable water bottles instead of the throw away plastic bottles they are currently using. We hope to see a reduction in the amount of plastic waste we create at the Poly.
Popcorn Fridays
The Student Council make and sell popcorn to staff and students on Fridays to raise money to purchase recycling bags around the school. We have equipped the Humanities department and other student areas. We hope all classrooms will be equipped very soon!
